If you are looking for a scuba divers dream dive location, then Cocos Island is the place for you. The island is located 342 miles (550 km) away from the mainland of Costa Rica where the nutrient rich currents attract numbers of species , but the main attraction is the schooling numbers of Scalloped Hammerhead sharks.
It is also home to several other shark species that you will be likely to encounter- most notably Whitetip Reef, Blacktip, Galapagos, Silky, Tiger and Guitar sharks as well as as many different species of rays : Mobula, Manta and Eagle Rays, as they all search for cleaning staions.
With about 20 dive sites in close proximity, from shallow to deep pinnacles , drift diving to vertical walls this is truly diving paradise.
It is a long voyage to the island but one that any serious diver will love. Jacques Cousteau pronounced Cocos, "The most beautiful island in the world." Thanks to the breathtaking marine life in its waters, Cocos Island was named one of the ten best scuba diving spots in the world by PADI and a "must do" according to diving experts. It must also be mentioned, that because of its heavy currents and surges, Cocos is recommended for advanced divers only.
